If you’ve ever typed “how to make money online” into Google or Pinterest, you’ve probably seen the phrase "affiliate marketing" pop up again and again. It sounds promising. But if you're anything like I was when I started, it also sounds confusing. Algorithms, links, commissions, traffic sources? Yikes.
That’s why I created this no-fluff guide. I’m learning affiliate marketing from scratch myself, and I want to share what I’ve learned so far in plain English. No pressure, no hype. Just simple, honest info for anyone curious about starting.
What Is Affiliate Marketing, Really?
Affiliate marketing means you earn a commission when someone buys a product or service through your unique link.
Think of it like this: You recommend your favorite notebook to a friend. If she buys it through your special link, you get a small percentage of the sale. That’s affiliate marketing in action.
Big companies like Amazon, Canva, and Skillshare all have affiliate programs. So do tons of small businesses.
Why People Start Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is popular because:
You don’t need to create your own product
You can start with little to no money
You can do it part-time, from home, with just your laptop
It's one of the simplest ways to begin earning online, especially for people who are just getting into digital products, blogging, or Pinterest.
3 Things You Actually Need to Start
Let’s skip the overwhelm. Here’s what you really need to begin:
A topic you care about. Are you into wellness, budgeting, or productivity? Your niche helps you find the right audience.
A place to share your content. Pinterest, TikTok, a blog, or even an email list. Just somewhere to post helpful content.
A product you trust and can recommend. Join affiliate programs for tools, courses, or products related to your topic.
That’s it. No website? No problem. You can start building from what you already have.
Common Myths to Let Go Of
You need a big following. Nope. Value > follower count.
You have to be an expert. Beginners can help other beginners. Your journey is relatable.
It’s too late. Not true. People are just starting every day — and so can you.
Beginner Tips That Make It Easier
Start by helping, not selling. Answer a question or solve a small problem.
Use free tools like Canva for pins and posts.
Choose 1-2 affiliate programs that offer real value (high-quality, good support, fair commissions).
Create pins that lead to helpful blog posts or videos, not just direct affiliate links.
